Projects

Here's just a small sampling of the natural treasures we've worked on over the years.

raised bed giveaway & mentor program

In 2012, the Home VEG program was started to promote vegetable gardening in Cowlitz County. Applicants apply for a free raised bed (with soil and seeds) for gardening to be placed at their home. Those interested submit an application. Applications are judged, and 10 applicants are selected to have a raised bed built for them that includes soil and seeds, as well as mentors to answer their gardening questions.

demonstration garden

Cowlitz County Demonstration Gardens , located at the Fairgrounds, established in the 1980’s, was created by Master Gardeners to provide a working area to practice various gardening techniques.  Today, the demonstration gardens, including many small beds, neighboring Cougar Cottage and Loowit Gardens, are still works in progress for the benefit of the Master Gardeners, hosting an occasional mini-class and maintaining environmentally suitable beds for annuals, perennials, blueberries, fruit trees and vegetables.  Our Master Gardeners work in the demo gardens on Wednesdays during the growing season and welcome visitors.  The gardens are a magical and happy place where we gather to work with soil and plants and eagerly await the results of our creative and practical ideas using WSU Extension approved methods.

loowit garden

Loowit High School is a local alternative school that focuses on hands-on, interest-driven learning. Our garden started with an idea 11 years ago and has grown into a wonderful place where young people learn about gardening, giving and about themselves and what they can accomplish. Our goal is to teach students about gardening, giving to others, and hard work.
